According to the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs , there are approximately 22.7 million Veterans in the United States. This Veterans Day, do something unique to honor and thank them for the service and their sacrifice.
Thank a Veteran with Service. Operation Honor Cards is a patriotic program that allows you to send a heartfelt thank you card to active duty military or veterans with a pledge of service in honor of their sacrifice. National service organizations like the American Legion Auxiliary and the Boy Scouts of America have donated over 10 million hours of service for Operation Honor Cards.
Interview a Veteran. The Veterans’ History Project is a national initiative to collect and spread the personal accounts of American War Veterans for future generations to hear their stories. You can register online and print the necessary documents. Encourage young children to be a part of the interview and ask questions about America and what it’s like to serve. Afterwards, your collection will be preserved in the Library of Congress.
Return the Favor. According to their website, this citizen funded campaign, sponsored by the VFW Foundation, creates awareness for our veterans’ needs and financially supports programs to assist out troops, retired military veterans and their families. Return The Favor provides services like prepaid phone time and ‘Free Call Days’ for deployed troops and hospitalized veterans to connect with their families and one-time basic assistance grants.
Donate. There are many foundations that support both active duty military and veterans. The Wounded Warrior Project helps raise awareness for the needs of injured service members and aid them assisting each others. Your donation helps the WWP to provide programs and services that meet the specific and unique needs of injured service members.
Support Businesses that Support Veterans. Many restaurants are providing free meals to active duty military and veterans on Sunday. Applebee’s, Chili’s, Red Robin and Olive Garden are just a few participating. Make a point to patronize these businesses for their appreciation.
