In every home, there is usually a large amount of stuff that needs a home on shelves and there is a variety of ways to categorize and store it all. From DVD’s to books and everything in between, you may have a lot of small items that need organization. Today we are going to talk about books, and why building a home library of any size will be beneficial to the aesthetics of your home as well as the next time you’re wanting to find a book to read!
Organization is key
One important reason to build your own home library is the organizational benefit of having all your books in one place. It can be hard enough to find the book you need in a well-stocked library using the Dewey Decimal System, so it can be even harder to find a book you’re looking for at home when your books are strewn about on various shelves in different rooms throughout the house. Random books in random rooms give the impression of someone who is messy and disorganized, while a uniform home library gives off a refined, learned vibe.
If you are lucky enough to have an entire room for your home library, try to minimize electronics to help cultivate the analog sensation of being surrounded by books. If you don’t have space in your home to dedicate an entire room to a home library, you may end up combining your home library with a guest room, den, or home office. If this is the case, try to keep the “home library section” of the room cordoned off as much as possible. If a TV is hung on one wall, try to set up your library in the opposite corner.
Focus on light
In your home library, you will likely want to have a comfortable chair that you love to sit and relax in with a good book. If you plan on reading in your home library, you will want to make sure that the light in the room is appropriate for getting reading done. A room full of books may look its best in low light, but that kind of light will end up straining your eyes after 20 minutes. If you’re committed to the low light look, try using three-way light bulbs that will allow you to switch from low light for browsing to something brighter when its time to really get your nose in a book.
Showcase your favorite books
While a home library will make you feel more organized and maybe even smarter, a large part of the reason to have a home library is for your guests. Even if you don’t plan to loan any books out to friends and family, there is a good chance your guests will end up perusing your shelves for recommendations or reading list inspiration. In this sense, it is helpful to do a little showcasing of your favorite books. Whether that means setting your favorites aside on their own shelf or simply turning the occasional book forward so that its cover is visible, this will help differentiate that book you picked up at a garage sale and never read from the novel you’ve read 20 times and changed your life.
